Researchers And Students To Develop Small CubeSat Satellites, the Size of a Loaf of Bread

A CubeSat is a type of space research picosatellite with dimensions usually of 10×10×10 centimetres (i.e., a volume of exactly one litre), weighing no more than one kilogram, and typically using commercial off-the-shelf electronics components.

Developed through joint efforts, California Polytechnic State University and Stanford University introduced the CubeSat to academia as a way for universities throughout the world to enter the realm of space science and exploration.

Currently, a large number of universities and some companies and other organizations around the world are actively developing CubeSats. One of these companies Clyde-Space, has just developed an ‘off-the-shelf’ website with information and resources for various sized cubesats and their subsystems. Other suppliers such as ISIS and GomSpace are also offering products and services through their websites.
With their relatively small size, CubeSats can be made and launched for an estimated US$65,000–80,000 each (2004 US dollars). This low price tag, as compared to most satellite launches, has made Cubesat a viable option for schools and universities across the world.

ADVANCED Motion Controls supplies servo drives to ROBOSOFT for service robots

ADVANCED Motion Controls announces development efforts with Robosoft, located in Bidart, France, to produce a new standard in service robots. Future Antennas Will be Flat

Antennas serve as transducers between electromagnetic waves traveling in free space and guided electromagnetic signals in circuits. As such, they play a critical role in the performance of wireless communication systems. With the proliferation of mobile wireless services that deliver voice and/or data in smaller and smaller devices, the task to design an antenna for a portable unit that meets not only operational requirements but also aesthetic and packaging restrictions is becoming more and more challenging. As result, engineers rely on a combination of theory, simulation, and experimental investigation to arrive at a design that meets all the demands of a particular application.

Basic Antenna Parameters

The basic parameters of antenna are impedence, mismatch and ohmic efficiency, radiation pattern and polarization, directivity, gain and equivalent isotropically radiated power, and effective height and aperture. More Than 550 Million GPS-Enabled Handsets Will Ship By 2012

In the wake of personal navigation devices’ success, cellular carriers have started to offer on-board and off-board navigation solutions, as well as a range of LBS (Location Based Services) such as friend finder and local search on GPS handsets. Community and social-networking-related functionality, such as the sharing of POIs (Points of Interest) and geo-tagged pictures, is also becoming popular and is expected to boost GPS-enabled handset uptake as carriers, handsets manufacturers, and service providers look to capitalize on the LBS trend.

“While most CDMA handsets are already GPS-enabled and GPS is set to become a standard feature in GSM smartphones, GSM feature phones are next on the agenda to be equipped with GPS technology,” says ABI Research principal analyst Dominique Bonte. “GPS chipset vendors increasingly target handsets, looking for new markets and spurred on by the recent dramatic growth of personal navigation devices.”

However, as GPS begins to penetrate lower-end phones, the cost, power consumption, and footprint of GPS chipsets will have to be further reduced. This will be made possible by single chipset technology and the emergence in 2009 of combination chips integrating GPS, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi all on one die. Major silicon vendors such as Broadcom, NXP, and Atheros are well positioned to develop such solutions following the acquisition of GPS chipset vendors Global Locate, GloNav, and u-Nav, respectively.

Engineers make first ‘active matrix’ display using nanowires

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -

Engineers have created the first “active matrix” display using a new class of transparent transistors and circuits, a step toward realizing applications such as e-paper, flexible color monitors and “heads-up” displays in car windshields.

The transistors are made of “nanowires,” tiny cylindrical structures that are assembled on glass or thin films of flexible plastic. The researchers used nanowires as small as 20 nanometers - a thousand times thinner than a human hair - to create a display containing organic light emitting diodes, or OLEDS. The OLEDS are devices that rival the brightness of conventional pixels in flat-panel television sets, computer monitors and displays in consumer electronics.

Raytheon Awards M/A-COM $2 Million For Precision-Guided Artillery Projectile Products

Tyco Electronics announced it has received a $2 million contract award from Raytheon Missile Systems to produce products for Raytheon’s precision-guided, long-range Excalibur artillery projectile. Tyco Electronics will produce M/A-COM telemetry transmitter modules, Global Positioning System (GPS) antennas and telemetry antennas to support Excalibur and contribute to the projectile’s accuracy in both urban and complex terrain and reduce collateral damage. The antennas and transmitter modules are high performance, miniaturized products that are integrated into the projectile body and can withstand all of the severe operational environments. Raytheon’s Excalibur is currently the only precision long-range weapon immediately responsive to the Brigade Combat Team. “We are pleased that our M/A-COM telemetry and GPS products have been selected by Raytheon for this important next-generation projectile,” said Tom Lavaellee, business development manager, Tyco Electronics. “We are confident that the M/A-COM components will contribute to the accuracy of the Excalibur, thus lowering collateral damage and helping to keep troops and civilians safe.” Larry Burke, product line manager, Tyco Electronics, also commented, “Our highly miniaturized telemetry solution integrates transmit, data encoding and power conditioning functions onto a single circuit card enabling the product to meet the size and cost goals of the program.”

The Excalibur precision-guided projectile provides accurate, first round fire-for-effect capability to current and future 155mm howitzers. It’s better than 10-meter accuracy is achieved with a highly maneuverable precision-guided airframe, which is achievable throughout its range with extremely low round-to-round dispersion. Excalibur is currently the only solution to limit collateral damage and optimize effects with the fewest number of rounds using precision-guided technology.
